Bias binding or braided seam: practical guide
Binding, also known as bias binding, is an essential sewing technique for neatly edging raw-edged fabric. It is used for:
- Hide frays: prevent your fabric from fraying over time.
- Obtain a clean finish: ensure that your finishes are impeccable.
- Joining layers: joining two layers of fabric together.
- Decorate a border: add a touch of contrast with a different fabric.
- Border an unlined fabric: allow a perfect finish for unlined fabrics.
What is bias binding in sewing?
A bias binding is a strip of fabric cut diagonally to the straight grain. This bias cutting gives the strip some elasticity, making it ideal for edging curves and corners.
Where to find sewing bias?
You can find bias binding in our online shop ! We offer different colors in 100% cotton. Regarding the sizes, for the moment we offer a pre-folded bias binding of 25mm width.
If you prefer a bias binding that perfectly matches your fabric, you can make it yourself. To do this, cut strips of fabric diagonally, with a width four times the desired final width. Then, use an iron to fold the edges inward, creating a ribbon that is ready to use.
Sewing tip: Make this step easier by using a small bias tape maker, which will help you fold the edges evenly and quickly.
How to sew inside seams?
The duct-stitch technique involves applying bias tape over the edge of the fabric, wrapping it completely. Make sure you choose bias tape that is the correct width for your project's seam allowance.
There are several methods for attaching bias binding, depending on the desired result and the shape of the border: whether it's following a curve, creating an acute or obtuse angle, or edging a V-shaped or curved neckline.
To visualize all the possible variations of bias binding, we will write and film different tutorials that will guide you through different techniques.
With this practical guide, master braid sewing and add professional finishes to your sewing projects!
